After more than a decade of exceptional leadership, Bridget Belsham has announced she will step down as Chief Executive of the Whanganui Rugby Football Union, concluding an 11-year tenure. Bridget’s contribution has been defined by dedication, innovation, and meaningful impact across all levels of the game.
Since her appointment, Bridget has played a pivotal role in strengthening both the on-field success and off-field sustainability of the Union. Her leadership has not only supported the growth and development of rugby in the Whanganui region but has also ensured the organisation is financially viable for the future.
Bridget’s influence has extended well beyond the local game. Through her involvement at New Zealand Rugby level, she has ensured Whanganui Rugby has consistently had a voice in national discussions. Her presence at the table during key decision-making processes has helped advocate for the interests of provincial unions and ensured Whanganui remains connected and influential within the wider rugby landscape.
Chair Pétra Allen paid tribute to Bridget’s remarkable contribution: “Bridget’s service to Whanganui Rugby has been nothing short of impeccable. She has consistently gone above and beyond in her role, making a lasting impact on both the game and the business of rugby in our region. Her leadership, integrity, and commitment have set a standard that is deeply respected across our community and throughout the national rugby network. While we are incredibly sad to see her go, Bridget leaves with the full appreciation and support of the Board as she takes up what is an incredible opportunity. True to her character, she has already committed to facilitating a smooth transition to a new CEO—even if that overlaps with her new role—which reflects the values she brings as a leader.”
Bridget will be stepping into the role of General Manager at Camp Quality New Zealand, an organisation dedicated to providing camps and recreational programmes for children living with cancer. The Board acknowledges this as a significant and well deserved opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a new sector.
Despite stepping away from her formal role, Bridget has reassured the rugby community she is “not going anywhere,” and will remain a familiar face—likely found on the sidelines throughout the season, continuing to support the game she has given so much to.
Her legacy at Whanganui Rugby, leaves the Union with a solid foundation for future growth and success.
The Board will commence recruitment for a new Chief Executive in due course.
